Apple Picking and Books

It’s that time of year when all the fruits are ready for picking! At least that’s how it is here in New England. It seems to be that from mid-August through the end of October there’s nothing but picking going on. We’ve got pumpkins, peaches, pears, apples, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. And I’m sure I’m leaving someone out!

Right now apples are ripening on the trees and it’s perfect time to take the family out on an adventure to pick some of their own. Often times apple farms offer hay rides and opportunities to say hello and pat their small farm animals. There’s something so special about spending an afternoon with your family on a farm, especially when it involves delicious fruit that can be turned into homemade pies, jams, and sauces!

What’s better then sitting down with a slice of apple pie and good book? An excellent resource for ideas on children books with an emphasize on healthy eatingĀ  is NEAT Solutions. I highly recommend you check out their list of Harvest of the Month books on apples. For a list of local farms in your area where you can pick your own produce check out Pick Your Own.

One Response to Apple Picking and Books

  1. Eliane Cotsford says:

It reminds me of when I was a child and my parents had a garden (in Switzerland). We had raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries (I loved these) raisinets (I don’t know what it is in english) and strawberries. What a pleasure to go and pick some every day. We made pies and preserves. I also loved to go into the woods and pick wild strawberries. They are so good !! Here in SC I picked strawberries a few times. Fruit are so much better if they are ripe when you pick them. I agree with you, apple pie and a good book sounds wonderful !
